Local Student Accepted to MIT, Credits Caddo-Kiowa Tech Center Experience
Fort Cobb, OK – Shelton Willis, a standout student from Verden High School, has officially been accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he plans on attending this fall.
Willis has been enrolled in the Pre-Engineering program at Caddo-Kiowa Technology Center (CKTC) in Fort Cobb, where he immersed himself in advanced STEM coursework, hands-on projects, and real-world engineering challenges.
On the matter of his acceptance, Willis remarks, “I’m generally a dry person, but this does put a smile on my face. The Pre-Engineering program at CKTC helped me discover who I am as a student and as a future engineer,” said Willis. “The skills I learned there—critical thinking, teamwork, and creative problem-solving—prepared me in ways I never imagined. I truly believe it played a major role in my acceptance to MIT.”
CKTC instructors say they aren’t surprised by Shelton’s success. “Shelton is one of the most academically gifted students we’ve had come through the program,” said Reed Allen, who teaches in the Pre-Engineering department. “He’s constantly asking questions, thinking ahead, and helping his peers grow alongside him. He’s got the heart and mind of a true engineer. He’s curious, determined, and always willing to help others. Watching him grow and reach this milestone has been incredibly rewarding.”
In addition to excelling in the classroom, Willis also competed in regional and world robotics competitions, and regularly earned top marks for his technical designs and presentations while in the classroom. He also excelled in several collaborative projects that addressed real-world issues using engineering concepts.
Shelton plans to study mechanical or electrical engineering at MIT, with long-term aspirations of doing classified work for the Department of Defense and/or in the private sector.
As his first semester of college approaches, Willis says he’s grateful for the support he’s received from his family, teachers, peers, and the entire CKTC community.
“They believed in me and pushed me to do my best,” he said. “It made all the difference.”
For the faculty and staff at Caddo-Kiowa Technology Center, Shelton’s story is a proud example of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity.
